◆「クリエイター ディスカッション・講演関連」

▼スクウェア・エニックスが何故「ラストレムナント」で"Unreal Engine 3"を採用したのか。
今だ発売されないどころか続報が一切出ないPS3版「ラストレムナント」。
その要因はスクエニお得意の販売戦略におけるタイミングの調整などではなく、純粋な開発の難航によるものだと思われています。その最も大きな難航要素が開発エンジン「Unreal Engine 3」を採用したことによるPS3開発での遅延･･･。元々PCタイトルと近い設計で開発できるXbox360では「UE3」は容易に開発を進めることができます。ですが、PS3はその特殊なアーキテクチャを持つCPU「Cell」のSPUに対して、より最適化をしなければいけない（PS3に対応してはいるが最適化が十分ではないと言われている）分、Xbox360以上に試行錯誤が必要になってきます。SCEも一応、物理演算ライブラリ「Physics Effects」においてPS3での「UE3」動作パフォーマンスを向上させるなどしているようですが、今だやはりそこには大きな困難が多くあるのでしょう。
そこにさらに、そのような技術面とは別に「UE3」は海外製エンジンであるため、ヘルプドキュメントひとつ確認するのにもある程度の英語力が必須というような問題もあります。企画スタッフならまだしも開発スタッフ全員にそのような英語力が備わっているかというとそんなことはないでしょう。言語の壁は大きいのです。そんなこともありPS3版どころかXbox360版での開発も至難の道だったことは明らかです。こうした経緯もあり、一概にスクエニは無能と一部で揶揄されているようには言えません。おそらく他メーカーが「UE3」を始めて導入した時同じ苦しみを味わうでしょう。

そんな中完成された360版「ラストレムナント」も完成度としては十分ではないというのが事実（テクスチャストリーミングなどのUE3自体の不安定仕様以外で）ですが、これでスクエニが得た多くの課題が次に活かせるはず。コスト削減のため開発プロセスを効率よく構築するため導入された海外エンジンをこれからどう扱っていくか、自社エンジン「Crystal Tools」との住み分け。技術面で海外勢に遅れをとらないためスクエニも必死でしょう、今後のゲーム開発動向に注目したいところです。まぁこの際PS3版「ラストレムナント」がたち消えても、自分は別にいいかな･･･なんて(´・ω・｀)　（GDCでの講演内容詳細は4gamer.netへ）

上田　そうですね……。たぶん皆さんが想像しているものから大きく外れていないんじゃないかなと思っています。これまでの集大成的なものになるんじゃないかと。これまでと同じように難航している状態ですけれど……。どちらかというと『ICO』に近いんじゃないかな。（ファミ通.comより ）

どうやら難航しているようですが、あのトロステでの「もうすぐ発表できるんじゃないかな」発言から大分経ちます。今回GDCに呼ばれたからには今世代ハードの開発を含めて語って欲しかったものですが･･･。


▼小島監督、基調講演で見える「The NEXT MGS」への道
今回のGDCで生涯功労賞を受賞した小島監督ですが、ディレクターとしてのゲームデザインについてこれまでの軌跡、不可能を可能にしていくためのプロセスを語った講演がありました。昨年日本で開催された開発者向けイベント「CEDEC 2008」ではプログラマが語る技術解説がありましたが、今回はディレクターである小島氏が語るゲーム開発の"これまで"と"これから"について触れたものでした。それほど専門的な話ではなく、我々ユーザーにも見えるこれまでや今のゲーム像が上手く解説された内容だったと思います。

そしてこの動画にある、講演の最後には次なる「メタルギア」シリーズのヒントにも取れる意味深なスライドがスクリーンに映し出されたわけですが･･･あれをどう予想するかはまぁ自由だとして、小島氏は既に複数のプロジェクトを進行させていることは過去のファミ通のインタビューでは明らかなので次回作がすぐに「メタルギア」であることはないと思うのですよね。「METAL GEAR RAIDEN」もういいですが････小島監督、そろそろ"熱いロボット物"を解き放つ時にきているのではないでしょうか。「MGS4」のREX vs REYを見てそう思わずにはいられないのですよ！次回作が明かされるという「E3」に期待します！


▼「レベルファイブ」はどのようにして今の地位を築いたのか？日野氏がレクチャー。
ヒット作を生み出す2つの方法、「キャッチコピープランニング」と「ブームトリガー」。
日野氏はこう言います、「プロモーション効果の高い要素をゲームの企画段階から用意する」、「面白いのに売れないゲームという悲しいモノを生み出さないために，しっかりと売ることを考えながら開発してほしい」と（詳細は4gamer.netへ）。
ディベロッパーとしてではなくパブリッシャーとしてもこれまで十分な結果を出してきたと言えるレベルファイブだからこそ説得力があります。特にキャッチコピープランニングというのは我々ユーザーから見ても、「もっとここはアピールすべきなのに･･･」と思わせるような明らかに売り込むために活かせるであろう部分、"もったいない"部分があったりします。そういったところを上手く見極めた時、ゲームそのものの面白さに売上げがついてくるのでしょうね。そう考えれば何かとレベルファイブはやってますよね･･･「攻略法をネットに書かないで」とか。まぁ攻略サイトを作るのはユーザーの勝手だし、それを止めるように強制することはどうかと思いますが、プレイヤー同士のコミュニケーションを強めたいというレベルファイブの考えも分からなくもないですね。まぁもっともレベルファイブには色々不完全だった「白騎士」のこともあり、ディベロッパーとしてのさらなる開発の心得、技術向上の方に期待したいというのが素直な意見だったりしますがｗ

ああ、もうスクエニは第一以外は駄目だなと思った。
